Meet Andrew Huang at MUI Supper Club in North Bethesda, MD: The Best Way to Plan a Chef-Led Night Across the River

For Northern Virginia diners, Andrew Huang’s MUI offers a reason to plan a Maryland evening around Japanese cooking, a six-seat counter and Miami-inspired supper-club energy.

MUI Supper Club in North Bethesda, MD, is owned by IVEA Concepts, which also publishes NoVA WTF. For Northern Virginia diners considering a trip across the river, the story starts with chef-owner Andrew Huang and the restaurant he is shaping at Pike & Rose.

Huang brings more than two decades of food and hospitality experience to MUI. Originally from Taiwan, he developed his hospitality background in Japan and later served as head chef at Uchiko Houston. Before taking on MUI, he was executive chef at Michelin-starred Kōsen in Tampa, Florida.

The Michelin Guide identifies Huang as the chef leading Kōsen’s omakase. His experience there is part of the background he now brings to a restaurant he also owns. It is a connection to a Michelin-starred kitchen in Tampa, rather than a Michelin award for MUI.

For someone planning the trip from Northern Virginia, our best advice is to decide what kind of meal you want before booking. MUI’s six-seat omakase counter offers an intimate, chef-guided experience. A regular table offers a different pace, with individual dishes and plates to share. Ask about the counter’s current menu and booking arrangements when choosing between the two.

The regular menu includes robata and raw preparations, alongside dishes such as lobster uni pasta with lobster dashi cream and miso-glazed black cod with corn and peas. These give a table a way to explore several parts of the kitchen. They are restaurant-menu examples, not a guaranteed omakase lineup.

Huang’s vision also reaches beyond the plates. He wants to bring some Miami energy to the DMV: a reason to dress up if you feel like it, meet friends and leave time for the evening. Cocktails, the illuminated bar and weekend live music and performances are part of that supper-club direction. It is an invitation to make dinner an occasion, with no need to treat dressing up as a requirement.

Keep dinner and special-event arrangements distinct when planning. Regular dinner reservations go through MUI’s official reservation link, while special events have their own bookings in the MUI app. Check the current program and availability with the restaurant; a dinner reservation does not automatically reserve a place at a separate event.

MUI is in Pike & Rose at 967 Rose Ave, North Bethesda, MD 20852. The neighborhood has parking garages and is served by the North Bethesda station on Metro’s Red Line. Choose the route that suits your evening and check current travel conditions rather than relying on a fixed drive time.

For Huang, MUI combines the responsibility of a chef with that of an owner. For visitors from Northern Virginia, the appeal is the chance to build an evening around his cooking and stay for the social side. The best plan starts with the dining format, then leaves room for the rest of the night.
