The best Hunan-Sichuan spot in Fairfax City: Mama Chang
Mama Chang, a Fairfax City Chinese restaurant celebrated for its home-style cooking and scallion bubble pancakes, was named to Eater DC's fall 2026 list of 38 best restaurants in the Washington area.
Mama Chang, located at 3251 Blenheim Blvd. in Fairfax City, has earned recognition from Eater DC as one of 38 essential restaurants in the Washington region for fall 2026. The restaurant, which opened in 2019, channels the cooking traditions of chef Peter Chang's family, particularly his wife Lisa and daughter Lydia, through a menu rooted in his childhood in Hubei province.
The kitchen draws from Sichuan and Hunan cooking techniques to create an eclectic menu that emphasizes vegetables, dim sum, and family-style meals. The best first order is the scallion bubble pancakes, the dish Eater singled out for must-try status. Other standouts include dry-fried cauliflower, spicy flounder, and the most distinctive main course: hot-and-numbing beef served in a stone pot.
Mama Chang serves lunch and dinner in a spacious dining room decorated with plants and warm wood accents. The restaurant falls into Eater's moderate price category. Peter Chang, a former chef at the Chinese Embassy, has expanded his restaurant portfolio throughout Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., with additional Northern Virginia locations in Herndon and Arlington, plus a planned Alexandria restaurant.
