Malaysian Kopitiam closing in Centreville after nearly a decade

Malaysian Kopitiam, an authentic Malaysian restaurant at Sully Shopping Center in Centreville, will close on October 31, 2026. Owners Leslie and Penny Phoon are retiring after nearly a decade at the location and more than two decades operating in the D.C. area.

Malaysian Kopitiam will serve its final customers on October 31, 2026, ending nearly a decade of operations at Sully Shopping Center in Centreville. Owners Leslie and Penny Phoon, a husband-and-wife team, are retiring from the restaurant business.

The Phoons described the closure as bittersweet, noting the restaurant had developed a loyal following. Leslie Phoon emphasized the rarity of authentic Malaysian cuisine in Northern Virginia, saying their restaurant was among the few places in the region serving the cuisine.

The Centreville location opened in 2018, but the Kopitiam brand has deeper roots in the D.C. area. The original Washington location operated for 15 years before closing due to parking concerns. The restaurant is located at 5085 Westfields Blvd. in Centreville.

After retiring, the Phoons plan to travel and may explore other food-related ventures, including releasing a cookbook, launching a YouTube channel, or selling the restaurant's sauces—options that would keep them in the food business without running a restaurant.
